BENGALURU: Minority welfare and wakfs minister B Z Zameer Ahmad Khan caught his partymen by surprise with a faux pas when he admitted in the legislative council that he is ready for a CBI probe into the Anwar Manipady report on the alleged scam in wakfs properties. Within minutes, Khan retracted his statement. The controversial report allegedly names several senior Congress leaders as beneficiaries of the scam.Replying to a query from BJP’s Arun Shahpur on a writ petition to be filed by the state government seeking a CBI probe in the controversial report, Khan said the report was rejected by both houses of the legislature as well as the previous cabinet. However, the opposition continued to press for a CBI probe. Khan attempted to turn the tables by demanding why the BJP did not hand over the case to the CBI when it was in power. To this the BJP replied by asking the minister what was stopping him now from handing over the case to the central investigative agency. To this Khan said: “I have no problem in referring the case to the CBI, although the BJP should have referred the case to the central investigating agency. Now too, the BJP can press for a CBI probe since the same party is in power at the Centre.”Caught off guard by this ‘suo motu’ decision, the Congress attempted to cover the lapse by sending subtle hints to the minister that the government is not in favour of such a decision. Eventually, senior Congress MLC, Abdul Jabbar, came to the rescue of the government and informed the minister that the issue cannot be probed by the CBI since cases were pending in court.Immediately, Khan retracted his statement and said: “I have only said that I will look into the possibility of referring it to the CBI and not directly hand over the case to agency.”The retraction prompted a heated exchange of words between the government and the opposition. The BJP claimed that the minister was going back on his word and that the matter has officially gone into the records of the council that the matter will be referred to the CBI.To calm tempers, chairman Basavaraj Horrati said he will rule on the issue after examining official records of the minister’s statement.
