more-in Two software engineers from the city, who ventured close to the Cauvery in search for a perfect selfie, were allegedly washed away in the gushing river waters in Mekedatu in Sathanur on Sunday. The two are presumed dead as disaster relief operations were called off for the second day on Monday. Around 10.30 a.m. on Sunday, Sameer Rahman (29), and his friend Bhavani Shankar (29), both residents of Bannerghatta Road in Bengaluru and natives of Bidar, had gone with two other friends to the popular tourist spot. According to the police, the two, as well as their roommates Amit and Srikanth, went close to the river’s edge to capture the group and the gushing river in a photo frame. Sameer, who was trying to take the selfie, slipped and fell into the water. Bhavani Shankar jumped into the water to save his friend, but even he was sucked underwater. Earlier in the day, all 12 sluice gates of the KRS dam had been opened, and water levels increased rapidly by over 60 feet. The police, along with Fire and Emergency Services personnel, rushed to the spot, but could do little as the river’s gushing waters, and swirls in the rocks of the region, made any search operation difficult. After around six hours of search, they called off operations, and on Monday morning, they checked the rock crevices under water with the help of locals who are acquainted with the landscape.
