Separate law may nix proposal to split BBMP

BENGALURU: Deputy chief minister G Parameshwara on Monday said all Bengaluru public representatives favour a separate Act to develop the state capital. He hinted at shelving the former chief secretary BS Patil-led committee’s recommendation to divide Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike BBMP ).After a five-hour meeting with Congress, BJP and JD (S) MLAs, MLCs and MPs representing Bengaluru, Bengaluru development minister Parameshwara said: “There is a consensus and suggestion among legislators to have a new law for the BBMP. The Palike comes under the Municipalities Act (Karnataka Town and Country Planning Act). We’ll discuss the division later.”During the meeting, questions were raised over why the city has stagnated despite mega proposals and projects sanctioned for Bengaluru.Legislators, including CN Ashwath Narayan (Malleswaram), raised the issue of street dogs and land mafia eyeing land around Sankey Tank. A Congress legislator raised the issue of the 27-floor building along Golf Course Road.The minister reportedly said builders claim to know several top leaders in the government, including KJ George. An irked George hit back, saying the same developers will say they know former minister R Roshan Baig too.BJP MLA Aravind Limbavali (Mahadevapura) raised the issue of traffic problems in the IT-BT corridor that’s in his constituency.Congress legislator NA Haris (Shanthinagar) suggested that the state consider running Namma Metro round the clock to ease traffic congestion in the central business district.Bangalore Central MP PC Mohan sought the government’s intervention in Indiranagar where a large number of pubs and loud music have irked its residents.
