Bengaluru: 107 foreigners held for overstaying

BENGALURU: In a special drive against overstaying foreign nationals, Whitefield police arrested 107 Africans, including Nigerians, on Saturday morning.Simultaneous raids were conducted at many houses in T C Palya, Brindavan Layout, Seegehalli, Priyanka Nagar, Anandpura Margondanahalli and other places in Whitefield, northeast and east divisions around 5.45am.Abdul Ahad, DCP, Whitefield, said the raids were planned after officials from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) informed police about foreign nationals staying in the locality illegally. FRRO officials accompanied cops during the raids.Ahad said the foreigners have been booked and will be sent to judicial custody. FRRO will take a call on their deportation. “We also have booked the owners who rented out their houses to the foreigners. Rules like asking the tenants for passport and visa copies and informing the local police station were not followed,” he added.One of the accused, Stanley, a Nigerian, was found to be in possession of 150gm of ganja and another had 50gm of cocaine , said police. “We got to know that another overstaying foreigner was wanted in a case being probed by Central Crime Branch (CCB) sleuths and have shared the information with them,” the DCP said.Police said most of the foreigners are from Nigeria and Uganda and had come to India on a student visa.
