more-in It has been close to two-and-a-half months since the academic year commenced, but students of several city-based private schools are yet to receive the textbooks. Many of those who have not got textbooks are studying in class ten, and are scheduled to appear for the board examination this academic year. While some students have photocopied the textbooks, some schools are allowing students to bring mobile phones to classes so that a soft copy of the textbooks can be downloaded and used for reference in the classes. A class ten student of a private school in Rajajinagar said he is yet to receive textbooks for Social Science, Science and Sanskrit. “It has become very difficult for us to read from soft copies. We thought we would get textbooks a couple of days after the school re-opened, but we are yet to get them,” said the student. Natesh Kumar M.N., the vice principal of an international school, said, “ Ours in an aided school. None of the 38 students in our class nine who are studying in Kannada medium have received their textbooks.” He added that the school is relying on photocopies. An official in the Department of Public Instruction said that the issue had cropped up as many of the schools had given the indent for textbooks after the cut-off date. “There was a slight problem from our side as well as the department’s portal for providing the indent was not closed even after the cut-off date,” an official said. Meanwhile, the department has also decided to use the database of Student Achievement Tracking System (SATS) to provide all incentives, such as uniforms and textbooks. “Earlier, we would go by an estimate and print some extra books. But this year, no extra books were printed, which probably may have also led to the shortage,” a source said. D. Shashi Kumar, general secretary of Associated Managements of Primary and Secondary Schools in Karnataka, said that they had raised the issue with the government and had been told that some books will be re-printed.
