The officer’s driver was attacked and the two managed to escape when some passersby rushed to their rescue seeing the nameplate on the car.Hooliganism on the roads has reached epic proportions inG Narayanswamy, whose designation is given asin the police complaint (but the income-tax website says he is commissioner, special tax commissionerate-I), was travelling with his wife and driver, Sampath Kumar, on August 9. At 8.13 pm, the three inebriated youth travelling in acar bearing registration number KA-50-A-3270 blocked the commissioner’s car. The commissioner had left his home in Yelahanka around 7.45 pm and was to fly to Delhi on some official work.At Sonnappanahalli, the driver took a right turn and the Amaze blocked its path. Kumar told the police he thought the Amaze driver was perhaps confused since it was a two-way street. He tried to steer away from the Amaze and but the driver blocked his path again. Then again. And again. And then they started circling the officer’s vehicle as if in a mad frenzy.Kumar then got down from the car and started clicking pictures of the three men and the car. That’s when all hell broke loose.“The three persons in the Amaze got down and started abusing me in filthy language. They started assaulting me,” Kumar said in the complaint. When commissioner Narayanaswamy stepped out of the car to help his driver, the three attacked him and tore his clothes. Kumar said that attack and punches on him were so vicious that he fainted.Thankfully, some passersby who witnessed the brawl saw that the car belonged to an officer of the income-tax department and came to the commissioner’s rescue. They subdued the trio and asked Kumar to leave from the spot lest things get out of hand.As Narayanaswamy was supposed to reach KIA before 9.30 pm, Kumar dropped his officer and his wife at the airport first and then went to the hospital to treat his injuries. He then filed a complaint with the Chikkajala police station. Since Kumar had noted down the registration number and had pictures of the car, police were able to arrest the trio on the same night. An investigating officer from Chikkajala police station said: “We managed to arrest the accused soon after. The three have been identified as Manjunath, 26, from Kodalahatti village, Ramesh, 25, staying near Toll Mess of Venkateshwara Nagar and Vinay Kumar of Hosahalli village. The three are at present in Parappana Agrahara central jail. We have seized the car too.“Manjunath is a cab driver while the other two with him in the car at that point of time work in private firms. All three were punch drunk that night. They were subjected to a medical test and then produced before the court. We will recommend the traffic police to seized the driving licence and recommend to the RTO to cancel it,” the officer added. The three were booked for wrongful restraint, voluntarily causing hurt, intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace and criminal intimidation. The commissioner, who hasn’t yet returned from Delhi, refused to comment on the incident.
