We don’t want to take chances by operating buses on that route at night,’’ said Kumar.The Charmadi Ghat route, is the only route available for KSRTC buses and light motor vehicles with both alternate routes Shiradi and Sampaje, being closed for traffic due to landslides and road damage. The Subrahmanya-Sullia road to Madikeri also saw road caving in at Kallaje, 6 kms from Subrahmanya, which resulted in only small vehicles to move on the half of the road available.

MANGALURU: Work on clearing the Shiradi Ghat section of Bengaluru-Mangaluru National Highway was going on at war footing with National Highway Division deploying all resources to clear the debris from the road.Understanding the gravity of the situation, the DK district administration has banned movement of all vehicles on Shiradi Ghat till August 25.Even on Friday, the movement between the state capital and the coast was severely hampered with KSRTC operating skeletal premium services on SK Border, Kalasa, Kottigehara , Mudigere, Hassan routes. KSRTC divisional controller Deepak Kumar said that the movement of premium buses on the SK Border route was an experimental one and Volvo buses would ply only during the day. On Friday only, four Airavat buses plied by noon. "Our intention is to see that the buses cross the ghat section by nightfall. KSRTC DC said that even the Charmadi Ghat route was hazardous since the road was deteriorating with movement of almost all vehicles.Meanwhile, one of the famous pilgrimage centres in DK, Kukke Subrahmanya was cut off from the rest of the district on Thursday, but on Friday connectivity was restored after waters receded on the Gundya-Subrahmanya road at 6am. On Thursday heavy rains in the Ghats caused the Kumaradhara River to swell and all the major bridges connecting Kukke at Kalmakaru, Balugodu, Guthigaru, Balpa, Yenekal and Panja, went under water. Barring Gundya-Subrahmanya road, others roads were not motorable though waters had receded since there was lot of debris and muck over the road and near bridges. The Subrahmanya-Sullia road to Madikeri also saw road caving in at Kallaje, 6 kms from Subrahmanya, which resulted in only small vehicles to move on the half of the road available.
