more-in The start of the week proved to be a lucky day for 500 bikers who were caught riding without helmets. The traffic police fined them ?100 and gifted them helmets in an attempt to create awareness on the subject. As part of a special drive on safety, the north division traffic police formed several teams after identifying sensitive areas where many people ride without a helmet. “Between 11 a.m. and 12.30 p.m., we fined helmet-less riders in R.T. Nagar and M.S. Palya. We spoke to drivers about the safety hazard and risks,” said Firoz Khan, Inspector R.T. Nagar traffic police station. After they were gifted brand new helmets, motorists had to write an undertaking not to ride bikes without safety gear. The helmets were donated by a multinational company to the traffic police as part of its CSR program. "The reason for this drive is to ensure safety of bikers and to reduce fatal accidents. Wearing helmets is the best solution,” said Sara Fathima, DCP (north traffic). The north division has the most number of fatal accidents compared to other divisions, she added. Traffic police officials have been instructed to give a pep talk to offenders emphasising road safety. The drive will be extended to other areas in and around the city.
