more-in The two new universities carved out of the trifurcation of Bangalore University — Bengaluru Central University (BCU) and Bengaluru North University (BNU) — are struggling to run classes as they are grappling with a shortage of faculty members. Sources in both varsities pointed out that the parent Bangalore University had not yet transferred teaching posts to them although several professors had opted for transfers. Students are upset with the apathy on the part of authorities given that it has been over a month since Higher Education Minister G.T. Deve Gowda had directed that teaching and non-teaching posts be transferred to BCU and BNU immediately. A faculty member, who had asked for a transfer to BCU, said, “It has been so many months since we opted for a transfer, but the university authorities are not letting us go. They are telling us that we may not get our salaries on time as Bangalore University is the university that is paying salaries to us.” An official of BCU admitted that the varsity is facing problems running classes as the government had neither allocated new teaching posts nor are BU officials allowing transfers. “We do not have a problem if the non-teaching faculty members are allotted later, but we immediately need lecturers as the classes for the 2018-2019 academic year have already commenced,” he said. Of the 698 teaching posts in BU, 37 have to be allocated to BCU and 20 to BNU. Around 18 teaching and non-teaching faculty had opted for a transfer to BCU and 10 to BNU. Another 100 non-teaching posts in both new universities have to be filled through transfers. The parent Bangalore University has 1,523 non-teaching posts. K.R. Venugopal, Vice Chancellor of Bangalore University, said that they had already written to the government to transfer the teaching and non-teaching staff. “We are waiting for the government’s nod and it is likely to be done in a week’s time,” he said.
