Prof Shalini Bharat appointed as TISS director

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), a multi-campus public funded researchuniversity, on Monday appointed Prof Shalini Bharat as its new director. Until recently, she was the acting director after the retirement of Prof Parasuraman in February 2018. In 1944, it was renamed as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, and in 1964 the government declared it to be adeemed to university. A gold medallist in MA from and a PhD from Allahabad University, Bharat joined TISS in September 1984 as a lecturer and became a professor in July 2000. Prior to taking over asthe deputy director (academic), she was the first dean of the school of health systems studies and the national coordinatorof global fund oroject at TISS.

She is currently a member on the governing body of the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) and associated withseveral other national bodies. The TISS was established in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work to create human service professionals to address the issues of unemployment andpoverty in the context of the Great Depression of the 1930s. In 1944, it was renamed as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, and in 1964 the government declared it to be adeemed to university.
