It was quite a celebration, considering the end of his 100th year had been riddled with health problems, a massive fall, and as a result, aAge proved to be a challenge for the doctors, with regard to both Iyengar’s medical history and his temperament. “He had cardiac issues in the past and had undergone a bypass surgery but had stopped taking medicines. Therefore, the cardiologist put him on medicines pre- and post-surgery. The second challenge was that his bones were osteo-porated and had become brittle. So, we used a cement modular bi-polar prosthesis. Also, there was some evidence of renal / kidney issues which was not diagnosed earlier,” said Dr Shankar BS, Consultant and Joint Replacement Orthopedic Surgeon, Manipal Hospitals Malleshwaram.Fiercely independent, Iyengar had been very active before his fall. He washed his own clothes and would not allow himself to depend on anyone else. But that meant something else for the doctors; Iyengar would not meekly do what he was told. “It was the temperament that had to be managed. He was resistant towards treatment/ anaesthesia and had to be convinced all the time. He would often behave like a kid and be very adamant,” added Dr Shankar.However, the hip replacement surgery went off well and Iyengar was able to stand up on his feet. Regularly undergoing physiotherapy now, Iyengar did celebrate a very happy 101st birthday on September 9.
