BENGALURU: An elderly couple was killed and four people, including a police officer, were injured in a serial accident involving a bike, a car and a police highway patrol vehicle at Karapanahalli Gate on Hoskote-Chintamani Road , near Hoskote, on Sunday morning.Police sources said the patrol vehicle was escorting Sri Vishvesha Tirtha Swamiji , head pontiff of Sri Pejawar Adokshaja Mutt, Udupi, towards Chintamani, when the accident occurred around 7.45am.According to police, the dead couple — Ramakrishnaiah, 80, and his wife Sarvalochana, 78, residents of Chintamani — was heading towards Bengaluru with their daughter-in-law, Nalina Kumari, to attend the marriage of a relative. Their driver, Nagendra, was at the wheel.Nalina and driver Nagendra sustained severe head injuries in the accident.Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Shambhaiah, attached to Hoskote police station and was escorting the seer in the patrol vehicle, sustained injuries in his left leg. Biker Hemant Kumar was left with a fractured elbow.N Kumar, deputy superintendent of police (Hoskote), said Hoskote-bound biker Hemant Kumar slowed down to move to the left side of the road, but by mistake, he had switched on the two-wheeler’s right indicator.Confused by the biker’s movements, the police vehicle driver coming in the opposite direction slowed down. Nagendra, who was behind Hemant, veered to the extreme right of the road, hit the bike and collided head-on with the police vehicle.Police said the Pejawar seer’s vehicle was not affected by the accident as it was at least 300 metres behind the escort vehicle. Nandagudi police went to the spot and found Sarvalochana’s body. Ramakrishnaiah, driver Nagendra, Nalina Kumari, biker Hemant and ASI Shambhaiah were rushed to a hospital in Hoskote, where the former was declared dead.Police have registered a case against Nagendra under IPC section 304A (causing death by negligence) and various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. Both vehicles were seized for probe.Shambhaiah and Hemant are out of danger, while Nagendra and Nalini are in a critical condition, said police.
