Sandhya, according to the police report, has been married for just eight months and was unhappy that her husband was never at home. Police say that she crafted this story to get him to spend more time at home. Cops had initially suspected that someone from the family was involved in the robbery, but were later shocked to know that the story was a hoax.Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) K Annamalai said, “We had taken up the case seriously, but during the investigation, the officer found that the woman had faked the robbery. A complaint was also filed under IPC section 394 and we have now solved the case. We are not taking any action against the woman for this hoax, but we have given her a warning.”Sandhya had told the police that a masked stranger in her room had demanded jewellery from her at knife point, and made off with four bangles, a pair of earrings, a ring and Rs 3,000. Recounting the events on December 9, Sandhya had said that her husband had called to say that he would be home late since he was at a friend’s house. She had returned from her mother’s house at 8.30 pm and found the stranger in her room when she was about to retire for the night at 9.30 pm.The reality was different. An investigating officer said, “On reaching the spot , we did not find any evidence of forcible entry. So, we suspected that it was an inside job. But Sandhya was sure no one known to her had come to her room. We found something fishy about the case from day one. We did not want to immediately question the family members as we knew they would be traumatised. When we subjected Sandhya to an inquiry, she spilled the beans.”The police said the couple had been counselled to solve their differences.
