BENGALURU: With 400 lakes and 850km of a stormwater drain , the city is still suffering for the sheer lack of water. The water security is an alarming issue with respect to the city’s increasing population , said retired IAS Officer, V Balasubramanian, at a talk in Jain University on Saturday morning. The retired IAS officer discussed about water security and how it can be monitored. “Creating awareness and educating people about the lakes and how water can be saved is the most important element of saving water,” Balasubramanian said. Various social activists, environmental activists, lake activists among others were present at the meeting. The city has over a crore population but the struggle for water has been immense. More than 60 per cent of the water that is consumed in the city is obtained from the rivers and lakes that are polluted said the officer. He explains that the major reason for lack of water is the misuse of water in the city.“An average citizen wastes 35 per cent of the water, it should be reduced to 15 per cent which in turn will help us save 450 million litres per day (Mld). Secondly, water from STP should be purified and reused. Thirdly if the water from the lake is restored then it will have nearly 200 Mld of water,” he added. The most important way to save water in the city would be to create awareness of the water around them. If people are educated about it, then they will use it wisely, else would all die without water.“The main reason for people to not be interested in water management is that of poor administration. BWSSB fails to pay heed to Rajakaluvey because they transfer the project work to a private group, which fails to understand the people’s requirement,” added the officer. People participation is the key to water security.
