BENGALURU: Metro services between Nagasandra and Yelachenahalli were disrupted after Venugopal , 18, jumped in front of an approaching train at National College Station in Basavanagudi on Friday.“Immediately, the train was stopped with emergency brakes. Action was taken to rescue the passenger and rush him to hospital,” said BLY Chavan, chief public relations officer, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL). “The passenger had fallen in between the rails because of which he survived. Luckily, he was away from the 750 volts DC electricity line.”Officials said Metro services resumed at 12.08pm.K Annamalai, DCP (south), said the teenager was upset as he had failed in his SSLC exams and was being scolded at home. “He had a fight on Thursday night with his mother. Immediately after the incident, police shifted him to Victoria Hospital from where he was taken to Nimhans.”Venugopal is the eldest of the three sons of Gopalakrishna and Vasantha, who run DK Tailors, a tailoring shop, near Nettakallappa Circle. Vasantha told media her son had failed to clear SSLC the first time in 2016 and was unsuccessful in two attempts later.“Recently, he had applied to write the exam again,” she said. “Though we had asked him to assist us in tailoring work, he had little interest and was always busy on the phone. He wakes up late every day. On Friday, too, he woke up at 9am. We argued about it and he left after breakfast at 10.30am.”Lokesh BC, an auto driver who ferried Venugopal to the station, said: “He and his friend hopped into my autorickshaw at RV College Road and asked me to take them to National College Metro station. They seemed to be in a hurry and asked me to drive fast.”Metro staff had a hard time managing the crowd that kept swelling at the station as more passengers arrived. It had a cascading effect on operations on the Green Line as all trains were halted. Thousands of passengers were stranded at various stations. The situation was chaotic at Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Station at Majestic since passengers arriving on the Purple Line (between Mysuru Road and Byappanahalli) could not switch to the Green Line. The disruption lasted more than 45 minutes.
