BENGALURU: The high drama that played out in the legislative assembly on Monday saw speaker KR Ramesh Kumar turning emotional at one point and recalling his ‘humble background’ from where he grew to reach where he is now.Reiterating his clean track record, Kumar said the audio tape, where BJP MLA Shivanagouda Naik is allegedly heard telling Sharanagouda, son of JD(S) MLA from Gurmitkal Naganagouda Kandkur, that the speaker had been "booked" for Rs 50 crore for smooth acceptance of his resignation from the assembly was hurting his public image."I invite the media and the MLAs to come and visit my rented accommodation in Bengaluru. I reside in a small house in Amarjyothi Layout, Domlur. I do not even have a nameplate in front of my house so as to ensure the neighbourhood is not inconvenienced. Now, if I have taken the money, where do I have the space to store such a large sum," he asked.Recalling his family background, Kumar said he is the youngest of eight siblings and that his biggest political mentor and teacher has been his mother. "My mother used to tell me to wash my feet before entering the house so that even dust from other people’s home doesn’t get into my house. I have followed this principle for the last 28 years," he said, breaking down.Referred to his first term as a speaker, Kumar said he was made the custodian of the legislative assembly at the age of 43. "The then chief minister HD Deve Gowda had called me to his chamber and said he wanted someone he could trust in the chair and thus could not make me a minister in his cabinet. Yesterday, when I met him again, I recalled the same incident. Today, when I have been installed in this chair unopposed, is this the punishment I have to face," he asked.Earlier, while referring to the debate on character assassination, the members referred to Ramayana and Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, pointing to the doubts cast on Sita and Ceaser’s wife suggesting that it was always difficult to prove a person’s innocence without a proper investigation. To this, Kumar responded: "Let us first finish the ‘Ramesh Kumarayana’ and then talk of Ramayana and Sita."
