BENGALURU: Deputy chief minister G Parameshwara , who inspected several Indira Canteens on Thursday in the wake of reports that food served at the eateries is not fit for human consumption, was confronted by some angry customers Parameshwara, who also holds the Bengaluru development portfolio, was at a loss for words when customers questioned him about the lack of cleanliness and poor quality of food during his visit to kitchens and canteens at Deepanjali Nagar, Vijayanagar and Nayandahalli.During the inspection of the kitchen maintained by Cheftalks and the Indira Canteen at Deepanjali Nagar, customers who had come for breakfast pointed to the lack of cleanliness. “It looks clean today but what about other days? It stinks and is is not cleaned regularly. Even drinking water is not provided daily and we are forced to bring water. The food is not cooked properly. While only water stands out in rice, sambar tastes like chilli powder with no vegetables,” a woman complained.Parameshwara ordered officials to maintain cleanliness and also to provide quality food and drinking water. “I am not denying reports appearing in the media but I can’t authenticate them. I was unwell for two days due to food poisoning after I attended a village festival. That only prompted me to think about the food being provided to the public. There are complaints that drinking water and quality food are not served,” he told customers.The inspection comes in the wake of BJP corporator Umesh Shetty alleging that quality food was not being served at Indira Canteens. Later mayor Gangambike Mallikarjun and some other corporators came forward and presented findings by the BBMP’s chief analyst saying the food was of satisfactory quality.Later, Parameshwara was served a plate of idli. After finishing the meal and endorsing its “good quality”, he picked up an idli from a customer’s plate to prove his point. He also visited another canteen at Dasappa Hospital, where food is served to pourakarmikas.The deputy CM said samples of both raw and cooked food have been collected from 33 canteens and been sent to the Public Health Institute and other laboratories for testing. He said he can comment on the quality only after receiving the test reports.
