BENGALURU: With several flight services offered by carriers Jet Airways and SpiceJet cancelled, airfares for available flights on major routes for March and April have soared 10-20% compared to the same months last year.Fares are expected to remain high till the end of April from Bengaluru to major cities, including Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. "The DGCA decision to ground 737 Max 8 aircraft has had a fairly significant impact on the airfares for immediate travel on certain key routes. "With an unprecedented number of planes now grounded due to various factors, reduction in seat capacity has led to an increase in fares overnight. While several flights of debt-ridden Jet Airways were grounded due to non-payment to lessors, the recent Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) directive on Boeing 737 Max 8 planes also saw five planes of Jet Airways and 12 planes of SpiceJet getting grounded. Last-minute airfares in March have increased more than 100% on some key routes such as Delhi-Mumbai, Mumbai-Chennai, Mumbai-Kolkata and Mumbai-Bengaluru, compared to the same time last year," said Aloke Bajpai, CEO and co-founder, Ixigo.
