Currently, the task requires 8 hours to complete. The manpower requirement will also be down by 30%.The Netherlands agency, Sweep Smart, had made a presentation before the expert committee at Mahalakshmi Layout. It had shown that the conventional method of segregation currently in vogue, where everything is done by workers squatting on the floor, is slow and ergonomically less efficient. It takes nearly 8 hours to re-segregate about 1.5 tonnes of dry waste coming to each of the over 166 dry waste collection centres in the city daily. However, to cut down on time, the Netherlands agency will be going in for an elevated conveyor belt sorting practice. Current experience indicates that the power required is marginally higher, but maintenance needs are very low. With Lok Sabha polls under way, the model code of conduct could have delayed the BBMP plans. However, the urban development department has placed the issue before a screening committing formed under the chairmanship of the chief secretary to take decisions on pressing issues that need to be exempted from the model code.“Since the model code of conduct will be in force till almost the end of summer, waiting for its conclusion may not be advisable as the funding from Netherlands for the project may no longer be available. Hence the BBMP commissioner has sought directions from the screening committee,” said an officer.According to officials, the BBMP commissioner had, on December 11, 2017, sought Rs 1.9 crore from the government to upgrade 10 dry waste collection centres. These are among the largest such centres in the city. Later, the government constituted a committee of experts under the chairmanship of IISc professor Chanakya to review the BBMP’s proposal.
