MANGALURU: The accused in the sensational Manipal minor’s rape and murder case has managed to flee on the way to Hiriyadka jail in Udupi , here on Sunday. The police has requested public to inform them in case the accused is seen anywhere.Udupi superintendent of police Nisha James said the accused Hanumantha Basappa Kamballi (39) managed to escape from police custody wile being transported to Hiriyadka prison. The incident took place around 7.30pm.The kidnap, rape and murder of a 17-year-old had taken place at Moodusagri of Shivalli village in Udupi on March 9. He was booked under IPC Sections 376 A, 366 A, 302 and Section 6 of POCSO Act. The SP had formed three teams to investigate the case and based on a CCTV footage, the accused was identified and arrested by the team from Udupi city bus stand on Saturday. The accused hails from Badami taluk of Bagalkot district Udupi SP Nisha James has sought information from the public. If he is seen by anyone, police may be immediately informed on Udupi district control room number. He is around 5 ft tall with dark complexion. He has reportedly thrown away the shirt he was wearing. Thus it is suspected that he may be wearing a white striped shirt or no shirt at all and green trousers, the SP said.The accused had lured the minor girl on the pretext of a job with higher salary and took her to an isolated place. The investigation revealed that when the victim shouted and threatened to inform the police and the family, the accused strangulated her using her 'dupatta'.
