The Karnataka high court on Tuesday directed the state government to place on record details of the number of old age homes in Bengaluru Urban district.

The state government was also told to indicate as to whether any scheme is prescribed as per the mandate contained under section 19 of Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, which puts the onus on the state government for institutionalisation of mechanism to protect life and liberty of senior citizens and stipulate standards.

A division bench headed by Chief Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka gave this direction while hearing a PIL, wherein the petitioners had complained against an old age home, situated on 8th Main Road in Girinagar area of Bengaluru.

Though the petitioners complained about noise pollution, the bench said that the issue needs to be sorted out through discussion and that the court cannot order closure as it may affect the rights of the inmates of the said facility.
