Over 20 people suffer side effects of COVID vaccine in Bengaluru

On Thursday, over 22 adverse event following immunisation (AEFI) were recorded after recipients took the COVID vaccine in the civic body’s west zone yesterday. This is the highest number of AEFIs recorded from any zone, or all zones put together in the city, till date.

Minor AEFIs including giddiness, fever, chills, and pain at the site of injection were recorded. Manoranjan Hegde, health officer, west zone told The New Indian Express, “The beneficiaries did not require hospitalisation and needed observation. Medicines were given to those with fever and chills but not to those with giddiness.”

The other zone in Bengaluru with AEFI was the south zone. This is not an AEFI and might have happened because of pain or anxiety. Shivakumar, health officer, south zone said, “She was fine after a few seconds and did not need medicines.”

52% of the targeted recipients were provided the vaccine in Bengaluru yesterday, until 8:30 pm. The drive is till 5pm but was extended for the first time yesterday. Of the 32,773 targeted people, 17,190 could get the vaccine. Haveri, Uttara Kannada, and Yadgir had zero targets and achievement.

The best performing districts were Mandya, Chikkaballapur, Dharwad, Hassan, and Chikkamagaluru. The total coverage from January 16-21 has been 57%. The government said that no big AEFI case was recorded across Karnataka. Yadgir, the rural areas of the district, and Raichur district recorded seven AEFIs each, on Day 1 of the vaccination. 

Shivamogga and Hassan districts recorded six each, Davanagere and Ramanagar four each. One case each was recorded from Raichur, Tumakuru, and Uttar Kannada districts.
