Even while the state government prepares to roll out the Covid-19 vaccine to senior citizens and those in the 45-59 years age group with comorbidities, cases are rising steadily, so much so Karnataka is among six states with the most number of fresh cases.

Figures from the Union health ministry show India’s total active caseload reached 1,64,511 on Sunday, with six states – Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat — showing a surge in new cases in the past 24 hours. “Nearly 86.4% of the 16,752 new cases that have been reported are from these six states,” the Union ministry said. While Maharashtra continues to report the highest daily new cases at 8,623, it is followed by Kerala (3,792) and Punjab (593). Karnataka reported 523 cases. As reported by TOI on Sunday, a team deputed by the central government is scheduled to arrive in Bengaluru on Monday to take stock of the situation in the wake of a spike in new cases.

“The Centre has been engaging with states and Union territories that are exhibiting a higher caseload of active cases and those reporting a spike in daily new cases,” the ministry said.

While the increase in daily cases has authorities in Karnataka on their toes, the spike is mainly due to clusters triggered by people who returned from Kerala, which is reporting a significantly higher number of fresh cases.

State officials insist Karnataka is not anticipating its health infrastructure to be overburdened any time soon, given that the recovery rate continues to be high.

With 5,638 patients under treatment, including 121 in the ICUs across the state, Karnataka’s active caseload is only 0.6%. Also, with more than 9.2 lakh of the 9.5 lakh total patients having been discharged, the state’s recovery rate is at 98.1%.

And, although Karnataka is among the top states in terms of overall caseload, the state has managed to keep the case fatality rate (CFR) below 2%. It has, as of Saturday, reported 12,328 deaths.
