Covid patient aged 70, hangs himself in Hospital ward: Haveri

CCTV footage showed the man taking the extreme step after everyone else in the ward went to sleep. The 70-year-old was found hanging near the door of the ward in the Haveri hospital. 

70-year-old Covid-19 patient reportedly died by suicide in the special ward for the virus patients at the district hospital in Haveri of Karnataka.

The man from the Lamani tribe from Ranebennuru had tested positive for Covid-19 on May 3 and was admitted to a local hospital, a police officer said.

On developing complications, he was shifted to Haveri District Hospital on May 5, the officer said.

He was found hanging near the door of the ward on Friday, he said.

The CCTV footage showed the man taking the extreme step after everyone else in the ward went to sleep, the police said.

"There were no complications as such. He was given proper treatment and care. He must have been frustrated," the officer said.

Earlier this week, a 50-year-old Covid-19 patient had died by suicide in Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh.

The man, a resident of Rehti in Sehore district, jumped off the sixth floor of Hamidia Hospital and died on the spot, a police official said

"He was admitted in the hospital`s general ward on Sunday after testing positive for coronavirus. We do not know why he took this step. A probe is underway," he added.
