The Karnataka government has decided to start the treatment for "black fungus" or mucormycosis in the Covid-recovered or recovering patients at Bowring Hospital in Bengaluru on a pilot basis from Monday.

The government has also decided to constitute a committee to treat mucormycosis. The committee will have an epidemiologist and a diabetologist.

Four cases of mucormycosis have been reported in Karnataka`s Vijayapura and Bagalkot districts. One patient went to Hyderabad for treatment and one of them went to Bengaluru, as per district authorities.

Health Minister Sudhakar said, "We don`t have an exact count on how many cases are reported in the state. We are forming a committee right away and also have asked the union government for the medicine which is used in the treatment of the black fungus."

Drug Amphotericin B which used in this treatment is supplied by the union government and the state has placed an order of 20,000 vials. The health minister will discuss with CM Yediyurappa to make the treatment free of cost as the drugs and treatment are expensive.
