This attitude helped him get the Ravindran Memorial Good Samaritan Award from the Automobile Association of South India on Thursday. Mr. Kumar, attached to the High Grounds police station, got the award for saving the lives of 10 children whose school van driver suffered a heart attack in December 2016. This is the first time the award is being given in Bengaluru. The award was instituted 10 years ago and people from different walks of life have got the award in other States. Hailing from a village in Magadi taluk, Mr. Kumar was born into a farmer’s family. “From a young age, my parents taught me to help people and now I am teaching my daughter the same,” said Mr. Kumar. Recalling the events on December 9, 2016 he said: “I was on duty near Windsor Manor hotel when I was alerted about the driver, Prakash, having a heart attack. I immediately shifted the children to an autorickshaw and drove the van to the hospital.” He admitted Mr. Prakash and even offered to pay the bill. “His timely action saved the lives of many children. He has set an example for others,” said B. Basavaraju, Principal Secretary, Transport, who was at the event. B. Dayananda, Inspector-General of Police and Commissioner, Transport and Road Safety, appreciated Mr. Kumar and said: “There are many unsung heroes like him.”
