Tailor steals 51 bikes to fund lover's treatment

Since November, there had been a spur in bike thefts in the city, par ticularly in Bommanahalli and surrounding areas.

BENGALURU: This may sound like a scene straight out a movie -a tailor in a garment factory falls in love with his co-worker and when she falls ill, he desperately looks for ways to make a quick buck to live happily ever after.But the best-laid plans of Manohar alias Manu from Naidu Layout in Hongasandra went awry when he started stealing bikes.The 23-year-old, who was arrested on Saturday for lifting 51 bikes is now cooling his heels in jail. Manu told police he needed money to bring his ailing girlfriend from Andhra Pradesh to Bengaluru and ensure her treatment. "Manohar and his colleague wanted to marry, but the girl fell ill and returned to Andhra Pradesh in January this year. She asked Manohar to rent a house in Bengaluru and make arrangements for her treatment."The girl was suffering from jaundice and hor mone-related issues. A doctor told him the tre atment would cost cost at least Rs 5 lakh.Besides, he wanted to take a new house for rent and buy household equipment. This prompted Manohar to steal two-wheelers and sell them. His girlfriend had no idea what he was doing," police said. Police seized 51 bikes worth Rs 25 lakh from him. Since November, there had been a spur in bike thefts in the city, par ticularly in Bommanahalli and surrounding areas. After questioning habitual offenders, police found it was the work of a new entrant."We put up pamphlets stating a private company was looking for used motorbikes for delivery boys. The accused contacted one of our staff who acted as a potential buyer.We caught him red-handed when he was trying to sell a stolen bike," cops said.
