Scientists take stock of trees on Jayamahal Road

BENGALURU: Some 41 trees on Jayamahal Road are waiting to be translocated to pave the way for road widening . We have also planned to give TDRs to people sharing their land for road widening." "There are 41 trees, mostly copper pods, mahogany, kat badam and ucchekai, between the post office side of the road to Mehkri Circle. Based on their assessment, we will translocate trees and float tenders to widen the road. Srinivas Rao , conservator of forests and official with the institute, said a team of 10 scientists is conducting the survey for over a month.

BENGALURU: Some 41 trees on Jayamahal Road are waiting to be translocated to pave the way for road widening . Forest conservators and scientists from the Institute of Wood Science and Technology have been surveying these trees and are expected to submit a report to BBMP by this weekend.The huge uproar against its proposal to cut 112 trees along the road next to Palace Grounds has made the Palike wary of going ahead with the plan. Commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad said, "Since we could not axe the trees, we sought the institute's help to understand which ones could be translocated. Based on their assessment, we will translocate trees and float tenders to widen the road. We have also planned to give TDRs to people sharing their land for road widening." Srinivas Rao , conservator of forests and official with the institute, said a team of 10 scientists is conducting the survey for over a month. "There are 41 trees, mostly copper pods, mahogany, kat badam and ucchekai, between the post office side of the road to Mehkri Circle. By the end of this week, we will get a report of the survey and send it to BBMP to take a decision," he said.The road widening has been proposed to make it a four-lane thoroughfare and decongest the Ballari Road stretch next to Palace Grounds.
