The troupe usually takes a break during this season. The mela, attached to the Sri Durgaparmeshwari temple at Mandarti, has five troupes with 200 members, and each troupe puts up around 180 shows a season from November to May, mostly at homes. The demand for the ‘harike aata’ by this famous mela is tremendous — its shows have been booked up for the next 23 years, till 2039-40. Pressure from devotees saying they have to wait a long time for the ‘aata’ has made the managing committee of the Sri Durgaparmeshwari temple consider the experiment of holding shows during the monsoon. The ‘aata’ during the monsoon will be held at the Temple Hall in Mandarti village, about 26 km from here. H. Dhananjaya Shetty, managing trustee of the temple, told The Hindu that already 108 devotees had registered their names for the monsoon mela. “Some are apprehensive that they will not be around when the show is held,” he said. “We will decide on the exact date of commencement of performances in August. These shows will go on till November. There will be one performance every night,” Mr. Shetty said. The committee is also thinking of starting the monsoon mela from June next year. “This would ensure that 200 to 250 shows are held during monsoon. We might even think of holding two or more shows per night. If necessary, we can even build a hall for it here,” Mr. Shetty said.
