more-in Bengaluru Scores of hungry people were disappointed and taken aback when they visited Indira Canteen in Subramanyanagar (Ward 66). The canteen that was inaugurated on August 16 was closed and a small notice stuck on the door that stated plainly that it was closed. But a surprise check by Mayor G. Padmavathi ensured that food was served to hungry citizens eventually. “I was on a surprise inspection when I visited Jalahalli (Ward 19) and then came to Subramanyanagar around 8 a.m. only to find the Indira Canteen closed. The staff - servers, cleaners and cashiers - were all inside. There was no reason for the canteen to remain closed. I ordered the staff to open it and serve people who had queued outside,” she told The Hindu. According to H. Manjunath, Subramanyanagar councillor, the canteen was closed by the staff following water shortage. “There was little water in the sump on Sunday and I had informed the jurisdictional health inspector about it. However, he failed to act on it. On Monday morning, as there was no water, the staff decided to not open the canteen,” he said. An irate Mayor later recommended suspension of the jurisdictional health inspector in-charge of the canteen.
