UVCE likely to get a facelift

In its centenary year, the prestigious University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) is likely to get a facelift. The facelift is long overdue, as students have been complaining for several years that many buildings and classrooms are in a dilapidated state. Circle to the Jnanabharathi campus based on the Kori Committee Report, which looked into the modalities of trifurcation of Bangalore University. Two varsities — Bengaluru Central University and the parent Bangalore University — are fighting for ownership of this college, which was founded by Sir M. Visvesvaraya. Bangalore University's syndicate, the highest decision-making body of the varsity, which met on Tuesday, has decided to give permission for renovation of the engineering college. The facelift is long overdue, as students have been complaining for several years that many buildings and classrooms are in a dilapidated state. "The worst affected are the hostels. It is extremely difficult to stay there," a student said. The State Task Force (STF) for Quality Assurance in Public Constructions, too, had noted that buildings require immediate attention. Based on this, sources pointed out that the principal of the college was asked to submit details of the estimated cost. The syndicate has decided to allocate ?25 crore for renovation, demolition and construction of new buildings at UVCE's K.R. Circle campus. Responsibility for the work will be handed over to the Public Works Department. Two varsities — Bengaluru Central University and the parent Bangalore University — are fighting for ownership of this college, which was founded by Sir M. Visvesvaraya. Recently, alumni from all over the world had protested on hearing that the campus would be shifted from K.R. Circle to the Jnanabharathi campus based on the Kori Committee Report, which looked into the modalities of trifurcation of Bangalore University. ?2 crore each for new universities To help the two new varsities carved out of Bangalore University, which are grappling with a fund crunch, the parent university's syndicate has decided to grant ?2 crore each to Bengaluru Central University and Bengaluru North University. "This was the order issued by the State government. We will have to comply and allocate funds to the new universities until they get grants from the State government," a source said. Both new universities were planning to approach corporates and other organisations for donations from their corporate social responsibility funds.
