Sanitation workers protest move to merge Waterworks Dept

Tribune News ServiceBathinda, August 22Members of the Sanitation Taalmel Sangarsh Committee staged a protest over the government’s decision to take Waterworks Department in the ambit of the Panchayat Department. The protesters alleged that the move would encourage privatisation of the former department. They raised slogans against the government and demanded that the decision of bringing waterworks under panchayats must be revoked on an immediate basis otherwise they would intensify their stir in the future. Balraj Singh, state secretary of the union, said: “On the garb of bringing waterworks under the ambit of panchayats, the state government is encouraging privatisation. We also demand that outstanding instalments of dearness allowance must also be cleared by the government on a priority basis.”
