BHOPAL: Kasturba hospital , run by BHEL , is facing a plethora of problems like shortage of doctors, wrong reports and absence of modern machines to treat patients. Unions have been raising the demand to improve the condition of the hospital for the past couple of years, but nothing has been done so far.Set up to treat BHEL employees, around 1000-1500 patients visit the hospital daily, but the availability of doctors is so poor that on many occasions they are referred to private hospital. “Recently, wrong pathology reports were given to patients. In such a situation, the entire hospital has become a white elephant,” said an employee, without quoting his name. Sources said unattractive pay scales and a ban on private practice in BHEL have led to shortage of doctors in Kasturba hospital. The hospital currently has 45 full-time doctors, which include 8 to 10 general duty medical officers. “There is a need of around 150 doctors, but the availability is only 40. Likewise the paramedical department is running with minimum staff. What could be expected in this situation from this hospital,” alleged Deepak Gupta, president of INTUC (youth wing). Gupta claimed that a big private hospital had approached BHEL management a couple of times for the facelift of the hospital, but nothing was done on the part of the management.Regular retirement of doctors and failure of BHEL in replacing them has led to this critical situation. At least four medical specialists quit their jobs in a span of 20 months between April 2013 and December 2014. The hospital’s pathology department is reportedly run by non-specialist staff, technicians and DNB trainees. Same is the condition of the orthopaedics department.GM (PR) Raghvendra Shukla admitted that there some problems in the hospital. “Issues are there but we are trying to solve them. Around six new doctors will join us soon,” said Shukla. Asked about the reason for the poor condition of the hospital, he said, “It is not like everything is wrong in Kasturba hospital. Since several advanced hospitals have come up in Bhopal , we have joined hands with them. We are trying to improve the condition.”
