AIIMS-BMHRC merger soon: Parl panel head

BHOPAL: After months of uncertainty over the merger of AIIMS and Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre ( BMHRC ) - meant specially for victims of the world's worst industrial disaster - here's confirmation. "People of Bhopal are going to get the good news soon," said BJP MP from Rajasthan, Dr Manoj Rajoria, on Saturday referring to the merger.

BHOPAL: After months of uncertainty over the merger of AIIMS and Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre ( BMHRC ) - meant specially for victims of the world's worst industrial disaster - here's confirmation."People of Bhopal are going to get the good news soon," said BJP MP from Rajasthan, Dr Manoj Rajoria, on Saturday referring to the merger. He heads the parliamentary standing committee on health and family welfare that will visit BMHRC on Sunday. On Saturday, after a meeting with parliamentary committee representatives in Bhopal, state chief secretary B P Singh also hinted at the merger.A sub-committee formed in 2016 — comprising officials from BMHRC, AIIMS, health ministry and department of health research — is expected to submit its report to the government soon.A standing committee on health and family welfare will inspect BMHRC, AIIMS and state health services.The merger was first proposed in 2013. BMHRC gives free treatment to over 5.74 lakh victims of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy and their dependents.BMHRC came under the Union government administration in 2010. However, over the last two years, patient care was affected as the super-speciality hospital struggled to retain and attract consultants, specialists and doctors. BMHRC receives about Rs 140 crore a year from the Centre.It is expected that merger with AIIMS-Bhopal would lead to demotion of many BMHRC employees. Similar references were made over the course of implementation of fixation of recruitment rules earlier. Top officials of AIIMSBhopal, DHR, and health ministry have met twice in the last few days. Once the proposal for merger is formalised, it will be sent to cabinet for approval.A number of senior consultants have shifted from BMHRC to AIIMS-Bhopal, leading to a crisis at BMRHC. The 350-bed hospital had to shut down its oncology department in August. The merger will boost healthcare as AIIMS consultants will pitch in.
