Active party workers used to vote for the most appropriate candidate through internal polling. “When Kushabhau Thakre was in charge, there was internal democracy in BJP during elections, and candidates were chosen through workers’ feedback. Bhopal: Former chief minister Babulal Gaur hit out at his own party, saying internal democracy in BJP is at stake and “selection of candidates is being done through NGOs” instead of feedback from active workers.Gaur, not one to mince words, says he is upset by recent tussles to claim credit for development works and “frenzied lobbying for tickets”. “The recent scuffle in Huzur assembly constituency has exposed how party leaders are eager to take credit for development work to lobby for an assembly ticket. This is a new era when NGOs have been roped in to survey for candidates. Earlier, selection was based on feedback from the party’s dedicated and active workers,” Gaur told TOI on Wednesday.According to sources in BJP, after Huzur — where Rameshwar Sharma is MLA — many ticket seekers are eyeing ‘safe seats’ like Gaur’s bastion of Govindpura and Bhopal Central, where from Surendra Nath Singh is MLA. “When Kushabhau Thakre was in charge, there was internal democracy in BJP during elections, and candidates were chosen through workers’ feedback. But now every leader has his survey team and NGOs are deciding the names. This process has severely eroded democratic values in the party,” he rued.On July 8, MLA Sharma and Shyam Singh, husband of Bhopal Municipal Corporation corporator Manphool Meena, were embroiled in a war of words in Sankhedi village, Huzur, over laying of a foundation stone. Their supporters came to blows in the presence of Lok Sabha MP from Bhopal, Alok Sanjar. Sources said both groups are strong claimants to an assembly ticket from Huzur. BJP has suspended Shyam Singh from primary membership of the party and police have registered cases against five of his supporters.
