School allows girls to practise martial arts

BHOPAL: National level girl players are allowed to practice for martial arts at a hall of government-run school from Friday. The government school at Second Stop has given many national level players in past couple of years. “With resumption of classes, we can learn martial arts,” she said.Players have to participate in district tournament from July 15 for Bhopal championship and they were worried as appearing in the championship without practice would affect their performance. For this purpose, we wanted a proper practice arena, which was not being allowed on the campus for past one month,” said the girl.Another girl said martial arts is not about sports, it also helps in self-defence. After the issue was published in TOI, authorities allowed them to do practice.

BHOPAL: National level girl players are allowed to practice for martial arts at a hall of government-run school from Friday. The school was not allowing them to practice on the campus after 5 pm, citing safety of girls as a reason.TOI had carried a story mentioning poor financial condition of girls, who were not allowed to play.A girl player, on condition of anonymity, said she is happy as practice has resumed on the campus. “We can bring medals for the state and country. For this purpose, we wanted a proper practice arena, which was not being allowed on the campus for past one month,” said the girl.Another girl said martial arts is not about sports, it also helps in self-defence. “With resumption of classes, we can learn martial arts,” she said.Players have to participate in district tournament from July 15 for Bhopal championship and they were worried as appearing in the championship without practice would affect their performance. The government school at Second Stop has given many national level players in past couple of years. This year, they were about to miss the opportunity after school authorities stopped the practice on the campus.When girls made repeated requests, school principal Vandana Chaturvedi asked them to give an undertaking signed from parents that it was their responsibility. After the issue was published in TOI, authorities allowed them to do practice.
