BHOPAL: He was barely 14 when he allegedly murdered a man in Karipatni village of Guna in 1987. Now, more than 31 years later, the long arm of the law caught up with Sooraj Singh Meena on Thursday. That’s not all. Since he was a minor when he is alleged to have committed the crime, the case would be heof Guna, and sent to the district jail, police said.Ask for details of the case, and investigators are clueless. Thirty-one years is a long time and the even the case file is yet to traced more ard in juvenile court, said police. The 45-yearold was presented in juvenile court than 24 hours after his arrest, said an officer. The cops don’t have much information on the victim, Gabdoo Singh Meena , beyond the fact that he was killed and the teenager Meena was blamed for it. “Not much is known about Gabdoo. Even the whereabouts of his family are not known,” the officer added.Cops have more information on Meena, now 45, who spent all his life looking over his shoulder and dodging the law in the Chambal ravines. His village is close to the border of Jhalawad district of Rajasthan and a small river, Anderi, is the natural boundary.Meena always took advantage of geography and topography to evade arrest, said investigating officer ASI Toran Singh. Sooraj’s hamlet is nestled in the ravines of a bordering Rajasthan village. He fell in the net when police started cracking down on pending warrants, Singh said. “After a tip-off on Wednesday about his presence in the ravines, we managed to reach on time and took him by surprise,” he said.Meena’s arrest triggered bewilderment and then anxiety among police. How were they going to prosecute him? Meena is one of the 42 accused in the case. All others were arrested and many of them have already been released, the ASI said. Police said the last time he attended a trial hearing was in 1993 and then he went underground. “It is an old case and we are tracing the file which was sent to court during the hearing of the other people who were accused,” said Singh.
