Bhopal: For MP’s higher education minister Jaibhan Singh Pawaiyya, a mobile phone , in the hand of a student, is no less than an atom bomb. And there’s nothing ‘social’ about social media. At the inauguration of a boys’ hostel and computer lab at Institute for Excellence in Higher Education (IEHE), he chose to give a little sermon. “Internet is good for students but its use should be positive,” he advised.“The energy of an atom can be used for both positive and negative things. Similarly, mobile phone is an atom bomb if is used for negative things. It should be used for positive things.”Pawaiyya, whose election affidavit says he is a civil engineer, said that he feels social media is “unsocial”. “I have seen people involve themselves completely in mobile phones. It has pushed people away from each other,” Pawaiyya said in his speech.Commenting on work culture, he said employees’ work speed changes after becoming permanent. “I have been noticing that the approach towards work changes after an employee is made ‘permanent’ since he is assured of his job,” said Pawaiyya. The minister’s comment comes in the wake of regularization of jobs of contract teachers and guest lecturers following protests. Reacting to this, the State Professors’ Association said that all employees are not like that. “It is not that everyone changes their speed of work (if they get a permanent job). There may be a few examples but it doesn’t apply to everyone,” said association president Prof Kailash Tyagi.Guest faculty also felt that they work more than permanent teachers. “You can compare the work that guest faculty do with that of permanent teachers. Guest teachers will continue to work just as hard after they are made permanent,” said president of Guest Faculty Association Dev Raj Singh.Students had been demanding for boys’ hostel on the IEHE campus for past many years. Hostel will accommodate 100 students. There was a long pending demand for central computer lab which was inaugurated on Monday.
