BHOPAL: Four months ahead of assembly election, the BJP government’s decision to turn Niwari region of Tikamgarh into a district has triggered an unforeseen row Orchha’s Ram temple — which will be in the proposed district — has turned into a flashpoint, with a BJP MLA even asking for a “referendum”.The proposed Niwari district will comprise Prithvipur, Orchha and Niwari tehsils, according to a government proposal. The jewel in Tikamgarh’s crown so far has been the 16th Century Ram Raja Temple in Orchha, the only place where Lord Ram is worshipped as a king.Legend has it that the idol in this temple was brought from Ayodhya , and the people here are proud to say they live in “Ram Rajya”. More than enough reason for Tikamgarh to try and hold on to it.Protests have started in three of the eight assembly segments of Tikamgarh LS seat — Jatara, Prithvipur and Tikamgarh. Niwari is also part of the same LS seat, and BJP MLAs realize the significance of the temple in the coming elections.Rustam Singh, minister in charge of the district, said, “The final decision is yet to be taken. Through a notification, the government has invited claims and objections. Any decision will be taken only after considering all the aspects.” Sitaram Maharaj of Nirmohi Akhada of Ayodhya, which is involved in litigation of Ram temple, said they will spearhead a movement against the decision.BJP MLA K K Shrivastava has taken it a step forward and posted on Facebook: “This is painful. There should be a referendum. Till there is a solution, Niwari be sub-district and Tikamgarh be the district. Jai Orchesh. Lord Ram reached here with a promise that he would be the king. How can we divide His kingdom?”Taking a different line, Prithvipur BJP MLA Anita Naik said, “Let Prithvipur be the district instead of Niwari. It’s a bigger city and business centre.” Orchha Bachao Sangharsh Samiti spokesman Pushpendra Singh said, “The area to be included in the new district accounts for 60% of Tikamgarh revenue and 60% forest area will also go with it, leaving behind a more backward Tikamgarh.” Niwari BJP MLA Anil Jain, however, said, “Ram Raja temple should not be made into a sentimental issue. It will remain where it exists now. We all should welcome the move for development of the region.”
