Want to be entertained? Pay 15% extra to Bhopal Municipal Council

Bhopal Municipal Council (BMC) council passed a resolution to levy additional cess as ‘entertainment tax’.For now, cess on cable TV subscription has been postponed, said BMC mayor Alok Sharma . Since additional entertainment tax outside the ambit of the GST, as states have empowered local bodies like BMC to levy entertainment tax. The move came after a memorandum by both Congress and BJP corporators seeking exception of entertainment tax on cable TV subscription. BMC council members argued that some relaxation be given for the lesser well-off. Originally, the BMC had proposed a 20% entertainment cess.

The move came after a memorandum by both Congress and BJP corporators seeking exception of entertainment tax on cable TV subscription. “A final decision in the matter would be taken after deliberation with urban administration and housing development (UAHD),” he added.The tax on cinema halls would be flat 15% for all classes. BMC council members argued that some relaxation be given for the lesser well-off. The proposal was marked for deliberations.Multi-arts complex Bharat Bhawan, war memorial Shaurya Smarak, Van Vihar National Park and a few other places of public importance, have been exempted from the cess, said Sharma.“It (levy of entertainment tax) is not such an important issue that needs to be discussed. BMC is dependent on cess and taxes,” said Sharma. He cited a July 9, gazette notification from UAHD. Since additional entertainment tax outside the ambit of the GST, as states have empowered local bodies like BMC to levy entertainment tax. Originally, the BMC had proposed a 20% entertainment cess.
