A mob torched the bus, enraged that the driver sped up instead of stopping when an eyewitness went running towards him to say he had knocked down a child.The witness, Sarwar Jahan, tried desperately to drag little Kulsum from under the bus but the rear wheels crushed her head as the driver allegedly sped up. Sarwar, herself, barely got out of the way and is nursing abdomen injuries. The driver, Mohammed Ismail Khan, fled but was arrested within hours.The bus was empty after dropping off students and the driver was headed towards Arif Nagar Stadium to park it. Sarwar, a local resident, told TOI that bus was going too fast on the turn.Sarwar said, “I was in the anganwadi centre around 3pm and Kulsum was playing in front of her house when the bus came speeding from Hanumanganj. It was turning when it hit Kulsum. Another woman shouted for the driver to stop but he accelerated. I ran towards Kulsum, who had fallen on the road, and tried to lift her to safety, but a rear wheel ran over her head. The driver still did not stop and sped on, crushing the poor child. I got hurt trying to rescue her.” Kulsum’s father Anees ran out on hearing the screams and fell unconscious on seeing Kulsum’s body.Anees’ neighbour Shahbaz Khan said, “I was at my shop and rushed over on hearing the commotion. I saw the driver running away.” Enraged locals set the bus ablaze. By the time police were informed the bus was gutted and all that was left was to haul it away by crane.Sarwar said that after waiting for 25 minutes for police or ambulance to arrive, locals took Kulsum to Hamidia Hospital in an autorickshaw but she was declared dead on arrival.ASP (Zone-III) Rajesh Singh Bhadouria said police reacted to the Dial 100 call immediately and have deployed a large force to ensure things are under control. “We are checking if the bus had a speed governor. If not, a case will be registered against the bus owner and school administration also,” he added. A case has been registered against those who torched the bus. They will be identified from CCTV footage, said Bhadouria.
