BHOPAL: Senior Congress leader and MLA from Gurh assembly seat Sundarlal Tiwari on Saturday demanded judicial probe into the condition of cow shelters across the state. The demand has been made after bovine carcasses were recently found buried allegedly inside properties of the Rewa Municipal Corporation “The carcases of six cows was exhumed in Rewa, hardly 15 steps away from the office of the municipal commissioner and mayor office, after stench from decomposed cadavers spread in the area,” Sundarlal Tiwari said. The incident occurred on August 12 after which Congress leaders in the district led by Tiwari demanded punitive action against all municipal authorities responsible for the mass burial of cows.Congress alleged that the BJP government only used cows for “political mileage to garner votes” while no one takes stock of the condition of cows in the bovine shelters funded by the state government.“Cows have also been buried inside the premises of a warehouse of the Rewa Municipal Corporation,” Tiwari said. “After the carcasses of cows were exhumed from near the commissioner’s office, we called the police and demanded that FIR be registered. Case was registered under section 269 IPC (negligent act likely to spread infection and disease). There are at least four more spots of mass bovine graveyards in Rewa town.”In the 2003 assembly elections, the Ganjbasoda alleged cow slaughter riots became a major issue and the BJP left no stones unturned to make it an emotive subject. Fifteen years later, the Congress seems to be getting ready to make cow protection an election issue.“In BJP ruled states, there have been lynching incidents over cow protection. Rumours are spread and then poor people are beaten to death. But what about protection of cows in shelters where they remain hungry, diseased and in pathetic condition,” said state Congress media committee chief Shobha Oza.Sundarlal Tiwari said that local cow shelters are run by a trust of BJP men close to a cabinet minister. “There is a cow shelter in Lakshmaan Baag area which is run by a trust of BJP men. Cows dies in large numbers every day and no one cares to maintain a register because that would reveal how many succumb in a day,” Tiwari said.Rewa has a predominant Brahmin population for who cows are holy and auspicious. Sundarlal Tiwari, himself a Brahmin said, “We asked for action against those responsible for the mass burial of cows inside the municipal corporation office. The BJP swears for the protection of cows but never before have cows been so humiliated as in the BJP rule. We demand a judicial inquiry into the mass burial of cows in Rewa and the condition of government funded cow shelters in the state.”
