MP ministers to play cops, to appeal for safe driving

The government has also decided to publicise the rules and guidelines and inform all enforcement agencies to extend their cooperation during the road safety week. There is a need for encouragement and inspiration among the public to follow norms before they are executed, said the chief minister. BHOPAL: Enthused by the latest social media campaign on road safety starring Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar , the ministers of Shivraj Singh Chouhan cabinet in Madhya Pradesh will play traffic cops to appeal to the road-users for safe driving and to follow traffic rules.The drive will be a part of road safety campaign to be launched across the state from September 4 as a part of awareness programme involving prominent personalities including ministers. The decision was taken in a road safety meeting chaired by chief minister Chouhan at Mantralaya, on Tuesday."The campaign involves participation of society for the safety of drivers and riders. From September 4 onward, ministers in each district will come out on the road to appeal to the road-users drive safely and follow traffic rules", said Chouhan in the meeting.Sources in Mantralaya disclosed that the state government alarmed by a spate of fatal road accidents and injuries has decided to effected some changes and introduced stricter rules in the Motor Vehicle Act. However, before taking any action, the government want to conduct an awareness campaign where cops, social and known personalities and the minsters of BJP government will appeal and convince the drivers to follow the safety rules.Chouhan said that during the road safety week, the ministers will also conduct public awareness drives in the districts of their charge and prominent towns in their home constituency. There is a need for encouragement and inspiration among the public to follow norms before they are executed, said the chief minister."The minister on road would create more effect among the road-users than any other personality. Apart from awareness drive, they can also rope in social workers, religious personalities among others to convince the public", said Chouhan.During the road safety week, the state government has issued instructions to take strict action against drivers who were found driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The government has assured the police department of proper infrastructure support including availability of equipment like breath analyser and speed gun, which could be used for evidence.In last one year, the police have suspended 10,000 driving licenses for consumption of alcohol during driving. The government has also decided to publicise the rules and guidelines and inform all enforcement agencies to extend their cooperation during the road safety week.
