Airport chief joins fight for more flights from Bhopal

BHOPAL: The online campaign of flyers for better connectivity at Bhopal airport got a shot in the arm on Monday after director of the airport, Anil Vikram joined the drive. The airport has all the requisite facilities to handle flights connecting to various cities. Only four cities are linked with Bhopal which has a daily movement of just 10 flights. Last year, there were 22 flights which has gone down to 16 this year," said a flyer Raj Sarkar. In a letter to Prabhu, the flyers have stated that 'despite having 15% annual growth in footfall, Bhopal still lacks direct connectivity to many cities.

Supporting the cause, he said that it was his duty to help the cause.Started last month, the online movement has already added over 17,000 flyers so far. Members of the group include businessman, professors, entrepreneurs, IT employees and students from India as well as abroad.Director Vikram said, "Being head of the Raja Bhoj Airport, it is my duty to help the cause. The airport has all the requisite facilities to handle flights connecting to various cities. Night parking facility is an added advantage. I am happy to be part of such a drive."In a Facebook survey, the flyers were asked which cities need to be connected with Bhopal and the top choices were Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad. Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Jaipur, Nagpur and Lucknow also got a good number of votes. Many urged for the need to have a direct flight to Dubai.Online group admin Prachi Baluapuri said, "It is a great boost. His presence will certainly help us immensely. I thank him for joining the drive. We look forward to any suggestions in making our campaign successful."The campaigners have urged civil aviation minister Suresh Prabhu to take an initiative into the matter. In a letter to Prabhu, the flyers have stated that 'despite having 15% annual growth in footfall, Bhopal still lacks direct connectivity to many cities. Only four cities are linked with Bhopal which has a daily movement of just 10 flights.'In the letter, the flyers have said that they are pained at the poor air connectivity between Bhopal and other major metros and non-fulfilment of the promise to start and international flights to connect west and south Asia. The flyers have also provided data to substantiate their demand. "Bhopal is witnessing 15.1% growth in passengers as compared to 2017, that is 22% in every quarter. Despite this, the number of flights have gone down. Last year, there were 22 flights which has gone down to 16 this year," said a flyer Raj Sarkar.
