MP: Self-immolation bid at anti-SC/ST Act rally

BHOPAL: A 45-year-old businessman tried to set himself on fire during a rally organised by a section of people from the other backward classes (OBCs) and upper castes in Gwalior against the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act. They had permission from the local administration.Several organisations were involved. The rally started from Man Singh square and concluded at City Centre.The self-immolation bid has triggered a furore in the Gwalior-Chambal region where people had taken to the streets on September 3 and 4.More protests are likely to be held in Gwalior, Morena, Shivpuri, and Chambal where leaders say the Act is being misused against OBCs and upper castes. “Police grabbed a bottle filled with petrol and took him into custody,” said a local resident who was at the spot.During interrogation he told police that the amendment in SC/ST Act has ruined future of his children and he was deeply annoyed.Large sections of people from the other backward classes (OBCs) and upper castes joined the foot march against the amended Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
