BHOPAL: Barkatullah University is caught in controversy after it surfaced that English medium students of the BCA department wrote answers in Hindi - and were apparently given pass marks. BU admits some students did write in Hindi but denies any of them passed.The first-year communication and management paper of BCA was held in November 2017. The questions were in English, but some 300 students answered in Hindi, say sources. When teachers saw his, they refused to evaluate the answersheets.When the results were announced, these students were declared as failed, triggering anger on campus. "Affiliated colleges kept demanding to pass these students if they have written the correct answers. The university gave in to the colleges' demand and got the papers evaluated again, this time by Hindi teachers. Students who had written answers in Hindi may be declared pass," said sources.A committee was formed and it, too, has recommended in favour of the Hindi-writing students, say sources. A university official said this isn't new. "This has been going on for a long time, especially with students of Itarsi Hoshangabad and nearby cities. Private colleges in such areas allow students to write answers in Hindi," said a senior teacher, adding: "How can a teacher who is from an English medium evaluate answers written in Hindi? I have never heard of this. Even if it was done in the past, it should be thoroughly investigated."BU registrar U N Shukla admitted that the incident took place."I am told that in the past, too, students wrote in Hindi despite the paper being in English. We are waiting for the committee's recommendations," said Shukla. He also denied that such students have been declared as passed.
