Labourer strikes it rich, digs out diamond in Panna district

BHOPAL: Yet another poor labourer is set to become a lakhpati in Panna district of the Madhya Pradesh . If one gets a diamond, it has to be deposited in the office of the district diamond officer of Panna, where precious stones are auctioned on a periodic basis.District mining officer Santosh Singh said, “Experts value diamonds, which are auctioned according to government norms.” Rich and poor alike try their hand at diamond prospecting by taking 8metre X 8 metre shallow mine on lease at a nominal annual fees. He deposited the diamond in the office of the hira adhikari of Panna. Diamond officer Santosh Singh, said, “ It is a clean quality stone and may fetch at least Rs 25 lakh price after the auction, which is likely to be held next month.

Quarrying in a shallow diamond mine, the middle-aged labourer stumbled on a big diamond, which is believed to fetch anywhere between Rs 25 lakh and Rs 50 lakh in an auction — a huge sum — a part of which will go to him.On Friday, Prakash Sharma, a labourer dug out a 12.58 carat diamond, a gem quality stone. He deposited the diamond in the office of the hira adhikari of Panna. Diamond officer Santosh Singh, said, “ It is a clean quality stone and may fetch at least Rs 25 lakh price after the auction, which is likely to be held next month. It is the biggest diamond quarried in past four years.Holding the precious stone between his forefinger and a thumb, Prakash beamingly said, “It would make my life easy when I grow old.” He came across the precious stone in Sarkoha village at a farm field of Kittoo Raikwar.Prakash is not the the only person ,who was trying his luck for a diamond.
