BHOPAL: State Congress on Saturday took out a unique protest rally in the city with a garlanded bicycle on a cart.The protest against the rising prices of petrol and diesel, ‘Chalo Shivraj Mama Ko Kare Cycle Bhet’ (Let’s go gift a bicycle to Shivraj Mama)” rally was flagged off by state Congress president Kamal Nath and AICC general secretary in-charge Deepak Babaria. Cabbies joined Congress’ protest, which was led by state party treasurer Govind Goel and MLA from Bhopal North seat Arif Aqueel.A huge gathering of protesters gathered before the state Congress office around noon on Saturday.Addressing the crowd before flagging off the rally, Nath said, “You are going to raise voice of people. When you gift this symbolic bicycle to the chief minister, he will be reminded of the day when he pedalled a bicycle to reach the state secretariat to protest a slight rise in price of petrol and diesel during Dr Manmohan Singh government’s regime.”Nath recalled chief minister Chouhan had declared he would go to the secretariat riding a bicycle once a week to protest fuel price hike. “Today, when there is a BJP-led government at the Centre and fuel prices are shooting skyhigh, where is his bicycle now?” Nath asked. “During the Congress-led UPA government crude oil prices were $128 per barrel in international market and petrol was selling at Rs 55 per litre. Today, crude oil prices have plummeted to $ 72 per barrel and yet petrol is selling at Rs 90 per litre. However, police barricaded the next square a little ahead of the Red Cross Hospital. After a tussle with the police, Congress protesters handed over the bicycle and a memorandum to the SDM.
