The programme will be made a permanent part of the curriculum once the staff figures out its rate of success and makes necessary changes. On top of this, if the police staff behaves badly or speaks rudely to them, it only adds to their troubles. But they have to understand that the victim has faced this for the first time and tends to feel lost and depressed. The rest 98% are innocent and we have a duty towards them as well. The five-day programme consists of a number of interactive sessions for the trainees to understand the importance of good behavior” he said. The ‘EQ’ programme has been outsourced to a private company.

BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh Police Academy (Bhauri) under the guidance of IPS officer Shushovan Banarjee has introduced an interactive behavioural subject ‘Emotional Intelligence’ for its recruits. The subject aims at improving image of police among citizenry and sensitize them to condition of people coming to police station to file a complaint. The first edition of the 5-day programme was held last week here for the recruits at the end of their training.Banarjee told TOI they are aware of changing times and the way some police personnel behave with complainants.“We have to understand any person coming to the police station to file a complaint are not exactly in right state of mind. They are troubled and tensed. On top of this, if the police staff behaves badly or speaks rudely to them, it only adds to their troubles. So, this new ‘emotional intelligence’ programme has been introduced on experimental basis as part of the behavioural science subject,” said Banarjee. He added, “Dealing with such cases all day long for years at a stretch makes some policemen indifferent as they have heard of such cases hundreds of times. But they have to understand that the victim has faced this for the first time and tends to feel lost and depressed. So sensitization became an important issue for initiating the image change”Banarjee said that citizens have a general perception that police personnel are rude and due to the behavior of some policemen, all of them get a bad name.“Out of the total population only 1 or 2% people turn out to be criminals. The rest 98% are innocent and we have a duty towards them as well. The five-day programme consists of a number of interactive sessions for the trainees to understand the importance of good behavior” he said. The ‘EQ’ programme has been outsourced to a private company. The programme will be made a permanent part of the curriculum once the staff figures out its rate of success and makes necessary changes.
