BHOPAL: The All India bandh called by traders on Friday against foreign direct investment ( FDI ) in retail sector evoked mixed response in the state capital. In many markets, shops remained closed the entire day.AICT claimed that the Flipmart deal led to closure of over 500 grocery shops in Bhopal and the overall business of shopkeepers and wholesalers is declining. While most shops and business remained open in the morning hours, members of All India Confederation of Traders ( AICT ) in Bhopal had to literally sweat it out to affect the bandh. The traders are also protesting the Walmart-Flipkart deal , which they claim threatens business of both wholesalers and retailers, besides government’s promotion to e-pharmacy among others. The traders’ body claimed the bandh was successful across state.Medical shops too remained shut during the bandh causing inconvenience to people. The e-pharmacy would adversely affect the business of medical shop owners. The traders threatened that next time they would support political bandhs only when their cause is taken up and supported by the parties.A spokesman of the state unit of AICT later claimed the bandh was “successful” across the state in which more than 35 lakh traders belonging to 1,800 traders’ organisation participated.“The day long bandh has resulted in a loss of about Rs 400 crore,” he said.Since morning, over 400 AICT members in Bhopal moved out from one market to another requesting the shopkeepers to down their shutters in support of the bandh. They comprised representatives of Bhopal Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Bhopal Chemists’ Association, MP FMCG Association, traders’ association from Bairagarh, New Market and those in Arera Colony among others.Though the shops of the main markets in new and old Bhopal as well as its satellite townships remained shut, a large number of grocery and other shops remained open.In the New Market, the shops in the front row were closed while those inside the market were open.“Back to back bandhs in the last few days have already upset the business,” a shopkeeper said, adding, “Even otherwise the business is declining and we can’t afford more bandhs.”Led by Kailash Agrawal, president of MP unit of CAIT and state president of FMCG Association Sunil Jain, the traders also took out a procession and submitted a memorandum to the additional divisional magistrate Santosh Verma.
